"Hi Shirley,

Here are a couple quick photos I took of one the pieces I recently used the EZScreen to apply automotive paint to a classic Triumph motorcycle I am rebuilding.

The piece depicted is a fiberglass “side cover” from the right side of the motorcycle which covers the oil tank. There is an almost identical mirror image cover for the left side which also came out very nice. One of the photos clearly shows the compound-curved surface of the piece, which made applying the paint a little more difficult than normal. To reduce the likelihood of problems, I made the EZScreen pieces as small as possible, and carefully pressed the screen to the surface in the immediate area as I daubed paint through the screen.

The paint I applied was DuPont “Chromabase”, a high quality automotive coating. I mixed it according to the instructions, using DuPont “basebuilder” as recommended for the most durable finish. This type paint is quite thin when compared to normal screen printing inks. I used a clean “painters rag” to apply the paint, gently pushing it through the screen. It took a couple tries to initially get the technique down, which I expected since this use of the EZScreen with automotive paints had apparently not previously been documented. Since the first color (red) was applied over automotive “clear coat”, I simply wiped off the imperfect first attempts using a rag moistened with mineral spirits, and then reapplied using a little less paint saturation on the rag I was applying it with. I cleaned the screens thoroughly with mineral spirits after painting, and they appear to remain in excellent shape for future use (think I’m going to do some tee-shirts with matching artwork to the bike). Next time, I will try the flat artist brush you suggest.

A little project info follows. The motorcycle is a 1972 Triumph. It is a “Trident” model which I have owned since about 1977, but it has languished, broken, in my garage since ~ 1981. Now that the kids have by and large grown and moved out, I have undertaken bringing this wonderful bike “back to life”. I hope to have it on the road within a month or two. The artwork itself is a combination of lettering similar to that used on the original bike, combined with a drawing of “ Neptunes” trident which I had done for a US Navy school. The Cross and Bible verse were just a simple overlay, but the lettering had to be done right the first time as I could not wipe it off without destroying the cross on which it was overlaid.

I am very pleased with the results, and look forward to further use of this product. Given the complex surface shape of the pieces I screened onto, I was surprised I got it right so quickly, and recognize that a little more practice will bring even better results. Thanks again for providing me a method to achieve the look I wanted, with professional looking results."

Warm Regards,
Russell
