I recently tried printing a design on a hat, and while it didn’t go perfectly, I learned a lot from the process. Here's what I did:
First, I placed my silk screen stencil on a homemade jelly plate and used a squeegee to swipe some fabric ink through the stencil onto the jelly plate.
Since the jelly plate is flexible, I used it to wrap the image around the curved front of the hat.
Unfortunately, the ink was too faint, and the result wasn’t great. Luckily, the fabric ink we stock is water-soluble until heat-set, so I washed the hat and tried again!
On the second attempt, I applied much more ink to the stencil, flooding the jelly plate to ensure the transfer was thicker.
When I pressed it against the hat again, the image transferred much better. However, while it improved, I still think there’s a more efficient way to print on hats—does anyone have suggestions for refining this process?
If you're thinking about printing on hats, be sure to apply enough ink and consider flexible tools like jelly plates. But remember, trial and error is part of the process!
